Chalfont St. Giles

Something for everyone

PROJECT OVERVIEW

This large garden in Chalfont St Giles already benefitted from mature shrubs and an established structure, but had become tired and underused.

The aim was to revitalise the space and create a garden that offered something for everyone, balancing relaxation, entertaining and practical growing areas.

PROJECT DESIGN BRIEF

  • Refresh and modernise an established garden
  • Retain and work with existing features where possible
  • Create multiple usable spaces across the garden
  • Provide areas for entertaining and relaxing
  • Include a greenhouse and productive growing space
  • Design a separate social area for teenage children
  • Introduce water, fire and focal features
  • Enhance planting while maintaining a natural feel

The Challenge

The challenge was not a lack of space, but how to organise it. The garden needed to offer a range of distinct uses without feeling fragmented or over-designed.

Retaining elements such as the existing Yorkstone patio also meant the new design had to integrate seamlessly, rather than starting from scratch.

OUR DESIGN APPROACH

We approached the design by creating a sequence of connected outdoor spaces, each with its own identity and purpose.

By layering features, materials and planting, the garden gradually transitions from a more structured area near the house to a softer, more relaxed landscape further away.

KEY FEATURES

Zoning and Layout

The garden has been divided into a series of smaller spaces, allowing different activities to take place at the same time. These zones are linked through pathways and planting, creating a natural sense of flow.

Existing Patio Integration

The original Yorkstone patio was retained and enhanced, with new elements introduced carefully so everything feels cohesive rather than patched together.

Pergola and Outdoor Fireplace

An oak pergola with an integrated fireplace creates a strong focal point and a sheltered seating area.

Set slightly away from the house and accessed via a bridge, it feels like a destination within the garden.

Water Feature and Connection

A simple pond adds movement and reflection, while the bridge provides a transition between spaces and adds a sense of journey.

Greenhouse and Productive Garden

A neatly positioned greenhouse and raised beds provide a practical growing area, designed to complement the wider garden rather than sit apart from it.

Relaxed Social Spaces

Further down the garden, a more informal setting has been created. A gravel circle with a fire bowl and log surround offers a space for evening use, particularly suited to the younger members of the family.

Planting and Landscape Character

Planting becomes more relaxed as you move away from the house. A wildflower meadow and a copse of Himalayan Birch help give the garden a softer, more rural feel.

Detailing and Lighting

Smaller touches, including hidden seating areas, a traditional bird table and considered lighting, bring character and extend the usability of the garden into the evening.

The Outcome

The finished garden offers a rich and varied experience, with spaces that cater to both family life and entertaining.

By carefully layering structure, planting and features, the design makes full use of the available space while retaining a natural and relaxed feel. It is now a garden that invites regular use throughout the day and into the evening.
