A family garden needs to do a lot.Somewhere to relax, somewhere to entertain, and space for everyone to enjoy in their own way.At this Chalfont St Giles garden, the layout was completely rethought to create different areas without making the space feel divided. The pergola, seating and fireplace now give the family a proper place to gather, while the rest of the garden still feels open, calm and connected. One garden. Space for everyone.See more of the Chalfont St Giles garden in our portfolio.

Steps and level changes should feel natural. You shouldn’t have to concentrate every time you move between the house, lawn, terrace or seating area. That means getting the height, depth and rhythm of each step right, as well as considering where people naturally pause, turn or carry things through the garden. The materials matter too.Using consistent finishes and planting around the level changes helps the different areas feel connected rather than broken up.They may seem like small decisions, but they have a big impact on how comfortable the finished garden is to use.Good garden design isn’t only about how a space looks. It’s about how it feels to move through it.Read more on the blog, link in bio at the top of the page.

Clay soil gets a bad reputation. It can feel heavy, sticky and difficult to work with in winter, then hard and cracked during long dry spells. But it also holds nutrients well, and with the right preparation, planting and drainage, it can support a really healthy garden. The important thing is understanding the conditions before the design and build begin. That might mean improving the soil structure, choosing plants that will thrive there, managing water carefully and avoiding areas becoming compacted during construction. The aim isn’t to fight the garden you have - it’s to understand it and design around it.

Another heatwave is on the way… and suddenly a pool feels less like a luxury and more like a necessity. 😅Somewhere to cool off, somewhere to relax, and a very good reason to stay in the garden all day.Anyone else adding “swimming pool” to the garden wish list?

Trust the process. There’s always a stage where a garden looks worse before it looks better. The ground is open, materials are everywhere, levels are being worked out, drainage is going in… and it can be hard to imagine how it’s all going to come together. But this is the bit that makes the finished garden work. It’s where the design starts to become real, and where all the practical details are put in place so the garden feels right, works properly and lasts. So if you’re starting to think about what you’d like your garden to look like next year, now is a good time to get those ideas moving. The process takes time, but it’s worth it.

A good outdoor living space shouldn’t only work on the perfect summer day.It should work when the doors are open after work.
When you want a quiet ten minutes outside.
When friends come over.
When the weather is nice enough, but not perfect.
When you’re just looking out from the kitchen. That’s why layout matters.Shelter, lighting, planting, seating, access and views from the house all make a difference. The best gardens don’t just look good in one season. They become part of how the home is used.Read more about Outdoor Living on the blog ⬆#OutdoorLiving #GardenDesign #LandscapeDesign #GardenIdeas #LuxuryGardenDesign #HomeAndGarden

The corner everyone ignores...Most gardens have one.The awkward corner.
The bit that doesn’t quite work.
The area that becomes a dumping ground.
The space you walk past but never really use.But those areas often have the most potential. With the right layout, planting, screening or seating, they can become some of the most useful parts of the garden.A quiet morning spot.
A place for evening sun.
A more private seating area.
A planted view from the house.Sometimes the best part of a garden starts with the bit no one knew what to do with.#GardenIdeas #GardenDesign #AwkwardGarden #GardenTransformation #LandscapeDesign #OutdoorLiving #BuckinghamshireGardens

J&S Scapes totally transformed a grassed, relatively boring area of our garden into a formal, sculptural but really useable area.  Whilst the end result is stunning, the way they work is also great.  Everything from initial concept through to final planting was really professional.  They listened hard to our brief, accommodated and adapted to our changing requirements and included us in all aspects of the project.  The team were a pleasure to work with and have kept in touch to see how the garden has developed.
