Who’s actually building your garden?
It’s probably not the first question that comes to mind when you’re planning a garden transformation, but we think it’s an important one.
At J&S, we have five directly employed landscaping teams, and we don’t subcontract our builds.
That means the same team works on your garden from start to finish, getting to know the project, the details and what needs to happen along the way.
Because a beautiful finished garden is only part of it - The people building it, the craftsmanship, the communication and the care taken throughout the process matter just as much. And when you’re investing in your garden, you should feel confident about who’s looking after it.

A little planting project in Wendover 🌿
Danny and Max have been busy bringing some new life to this smaller garden.
Proof that you don’t need a huge space to make a big difference!

Things are taking shape at our Cublington project! 🌿
The gabion walls are coming along nicely, with Ollie carefully facing each basket with Cotswold Gabion stone.
Behind the stonework, we’re making good use of what’s already on site, reusing rubble from the garden’s original walls to backfill the baskets.
A lovely combination of skilled craftsmanship and making the most of existing materials.
Plenty more to come from this garden, so follow along to see how it all comes together!

You’ve seen plenty of our gardens, but perhaps not quite as much of the people behind them! So we thought it was about time we made some introductions.
Because behind every finished garden are the people making the decisions, solving the challenges and making sure all those little details come together.
And while we love sharing the finished results, there`s a lot more to J&S than the final photographs. It all starts with the people, their experience and a shared passion for creating beautiful gardens.

A little progress update from one of our design and build projects in Thame!
This garden has a few interesting challenges, including two culverts and an underground pipe running across the bottom of the garden.
But rather than seeing these as obstacles, we’ve incorporated them into the design.
Decking will be built over the culverts, with one left open to create a wildlife pond. There are also rainwater harvesting tanks installed beneath the garden.
The team are currently working on getting the levels right, ready for the lawns, which will be retained with timber sleepers.
We’re also using a lovely combination of Desert Sand Limestone and Rose Cottage clay pavers, both supplied by @countrysuppliesuk
Still plenty to do, but we’re looking forward to seeing this one come together!

Clay soil. Sloping gardens. Changing levels. Drainage.
We come across all of them regularly around Buckinghamshire and the Chilterns.
None of them automatically make a garden “difficult”. They just need to be understood properly.
The right planting, drainage, materials and layout can turn something that initially feels like a problem into part of what makes the garden work.
Good garden design isn’t about forcing the same solution onto every space.
It starts with understanding the garden you actually have.
If your garden has a challenge you’re not sure how to work with, get in touch - we’d be happy to talk through what could be possible.
By September, you usually know your garden pretty well.
You know where everyone naturally gravitates to, where it gets too hot, which corners are ignored and whether the patio suddenly feels very small once the furniture and barbecue are out.
That makes now a really useful time to take stock.
You don’t necessarily need a completely new garden. Sometimes it’s simply about making the space work better for the way you actually live.
Save these questions and have another look at your garden while summer is still fresh in your mind.
1️⃣ Where did you naturally spend the most time?
2️⃣ Which parts of the garden barely got used?
3️⃣ Did you have enough shade and shelter?
4️⃣ Was there enough room when friends and family came over?
5️⃣ What frustrated you most?
And if next summer needs to look a little different, autumn is a very good time to start planning.
A well-designed garden takes time to plan and build, so getting started now gives you far more chance of being ready to enjoy it when the warmer weather comes back.
