Another heatwave is on the way… and suddenly a pool feels less like a luxury and more like a necessity. 😅
Somewhere to cool off, somewhere to relax, and a very good reason to stay in the garden all day.
Anyone else adding “swimming pool” to the garden wish list?
With the hosepipe ban now in place, looking after your garden is less about watering everything and more about understanding what genuinely needs your attention.
Prioritise newly planted trees, shrubs, hedging and perennials, along with containers, fruit, vegetables and anything showing obvious signs of stress. New planting has not yet developed the deeper root systems that help established plants cope with prolonged dry weather.
Use a watering can or bucket to apply water slowly and directly around the roots. A proper soak less frequently is more useful than lightly sprinkling the surface each day.
Established lawns may turn brown, but they will usually recover when the rain returns. Unless the lawn is newly laid, your available water is better used elsewhere.
Some drip or trickle irrigation systems may still be permitted during a hosepipe ban, provided they comply with the relevant exemption conditions. Rules can vary, so always check the latest guidance from your own water supplier before using an irrigation system.
And remember: plant food cannot rescue a dehydrated plant. If the soil is bone dry or the plant is badly wilted, water it first and allow it to recover. Feed later, only where needed and at the recommended strength.
Water carefully, avoid run-off and add mulch where possible to help the soil hold onto moisture for longer.
Save this as a reminder throughout the hosepipe ban.
Trust the process.
There’s always a stage where a garden looks worse before it looks better.
The ground is open, materials are everywhere, levels are being worked out, drainage is going in… and it can be hard to imagine how it’s all going to come together.
But this is the bit that makes the finished garden work.
It’s where the design starts to become real, and where all the practical details are put in place so the garden feels right, works properly and lasts.
So if you’re starting to think about what you’d like your garden to look like next year, now is a good time to get those ideas moving.
The process takes time, but it’s worth it.
A good outdoor living space shouldn’t only work on the perfect summer day.
It should work when the doors are open after work.
When you want a quiet ten minutes outside.
When friends come over.
When the weather is nice enough, but not perfect.
When you’re just looking out from the kitchen.
That’s why layout matters.
Shelter, lighting, planting, seating, access and views from the house all make a difference.
The best gardens don’t just look good in one season.
They become part of how the home is used.

The short answer? Probably not.
A well-designed garden takes time. Design, surveys, planning, ordering materials and scheduling the build all happen before work even starts on site.
The good news is that if you’re hoping to enjoy a new garden next summer, this is exactly the right time to begin the process. Planning now means we can design everything properly and aim for a winter build, so your garden is ready to enjoy when the warmer weather returns.

This new build garden started as a blank canvas.
The brief was to create a contemporary family garden with more privacy, structure and character - somewhere that worked for everyday life, but still felt refined and considered.
The finished space now includes defined areas for dining, relaxing and play, with porcelain paving, gravel and brick details, soft planting, lighting and a bespoke water feature.

Q&A with Danny | How long does the design process usually take?
It’s one of the questions we’re asked a lot, and the honest answer is: it depends on the garden.
Every space is different, and the design process needs time for the first conversation, site survey, ideas, concept plans and any changes along the way.
If you’re thinking about a garden project, especially for next year, it’s always worth starting the conversation early.

The Chilterns are full of hills.
And with that comes a lot of sloped gardens.
They can be tricky spaces to get right. The levels, the access, the drainage, the steps - there’s usually a lot more to think about than there first appears.
But a slope doesn’t have to be a problem.
Handled well, it can give a garden so much character. Different levels, better views, tucked-away seating, layered planting, and spaces that feel far more interesting than one flat lawn.
The important bit is making sure the practical details are properly thought through from the start.
Because when the structure works, the whole garden feels easier to use.
