We have recently completed the design for this interesting new build property in The Chalfonts. As with many a new build, the existing garden has largely been laid with lawn and an insufficient patio, not to mention a minimum of six inspection chamber covers.

The client instructed J&S Scapes to design a space in the style of the classic English garden. This was to feature lots of planting with clipped evergreen structure and big herbaceous borders. Boundaries are to be obscured with climbers and the garden to be enclosed with gentle screening.

The existing paving is laid in a semi-circular pattern and rather than remove all of this at great expense, we extended the circular theme and will simply ‘tie in’ with matching paving.

In a small space one circle befits another, so the lawns and borders work with this shape to create a curvaceous garden. The garden has a gentle slope but we have managed to plateau the space with small retaining walls to create interesting level changes.

To the front, the garden is kept very simple and works to hide the many inspection chambers running across the property. We have created a take on the classic knot garden with the use of box balls and planted the space to soften the facade and create a welcoming entrance to the home. Planting is to include species with good scent, which will hold in this enclosed space.

We are hoping to begin the build late in the summer and provide this client with the classic English garden they have always craved.
