Berkhamsted

Creating outdoor rooms.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

This project in Berkhamsted focused on transforming a large, underused patio into a series of inviting outdoor spaces.

While the footprint already existed, the aim was to reshape it into a garden that offered purpose, comfort and a stronger connection to the house.

PROJECT DESIGN BRIEF

  • Rework an existing, oversized patio area
  • Create defined zones for dining and relaxation
  • Introduce screening for privacy
  • Break up the scale of the hard landscaping
  • Add structure and softness through planting
  • Reflect the character and style of the house
  • Incorporate subtle features to enhance atmosphere

The Challenge

The main challenge was the scale and lack of definition within the existing patio. It felt open and exposed, with no clear purpose or flow between areas.

The design needed to introduce structure without feeling overly divided, while also adding warmth and interest to what was a flat and relatively featureless space.

OUR DESIGN APPROACH

We approached the space by creating a series of outdoor rooms, each with a clear function but connected through a consistent palette of materials and planting.

By introducing layers, screening and subtle level changes, the garden now feels more human in scale and far more usable throughout the day.

KEY FEATURES

Zoning and Layout

The patio has been carefully divided into distinct areas for dining and relaxing. Each space has its own identity while still feeling part of a cohesive overall design.

Dining Area and Pergola

A dedicated dining space is defined by an aluminium pergola, which provides both enclosure and structure. This helps anchor the space and creates a comfortable setting for outdoor meals.

Screening and Structure

Pleached trees provide effective screening while maintaining an open feel overhead. Their raised canopy creates a natural arch effect along the pathway, adding both privacy and visual interest.

Breaking Down the Space

Brick detailing set within the patio helps to soften the expanses of paving and visually break up the area. This adds texture and a sense of craftsmanship to the design.

Relaxation Area

A separate seating area has been positioned to capture the evening sun, making it an ideal spot to unwind. Planting creates a subtle division between this space and the rest of the patio, giving it a more intimate feel.

Steps and Connection to Lawn

A generous set of steps leads down to the lawn, improving the transition between levels and helping the garden feel more connected overall.

Water Feature

A simple water bowl has been adapted into a running water feature, introducing a gentle sound that enhances the calm and atmosphere of the space.

Planting and Character

The planting scheme reflects the client’s interest in Japanese gardens. Species such as Acer, Hakonechloa macra, Pachysandra and Sarcococca have been used to create a softer, more tranquil setting.

Walkway and Movement

A decked walkway runs through the planting, encouraging movement through the garden and turning the space into more of a journey rather than a single open area.

The Outcome

The finished garden transforms a once uninviting patio into a series of well-balanced outdoor spaces.

By introducing structure, planting and defined zones, the design creates a more comfortable and engaging environment that can be enjoyed throughout the day and into the evening.
