Berkhamsted
Creating outdoor rooms.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
This project in Berkhamsted focused on transforming a large, underused patio into a series of inviting outdoor spaces.
While the footprint already existed, the aim was to reshape it into a garden that offered purpose, comfort and a stronger connection to the house.
PROJECT DESIGN BRIEF
- Rework an existing, oversized patio area
- Create defined zones for dining and relaxation
- Introduce screening for privacy
- Break up the scale of the hard landscaping
- Add structure and softness through planting
- Reflect the character and style of the house
- Incorporate subtle features to enhance atmosphere

The Challenge
The main challenge was the scale and lack of definition within the existing patio. It felt open and exposed, with no clear purpose or flow between areas.
The design needed to introduce structure without feeling overly divided, while also adding warmth and interest to what was a flat and relatively featureless space.
OUR DESIGN APPROACH
We approached the space by creating a series of outdoor rooms, each with a clear function but connected through a consistent palette of materials and planting.
By introducing layers, screening and subtle level changes, the garden now feels more human in scale and far more usable throughout the day.

KEY FEATURES
The Outcome
The finished garden transforms a once uninviting patio into a series of well-balanced outdoor spaces.
By introducing structure, planting and defined zones, the design creates a more comfortable and engaging environment that can be enjoyed throughout the day and into the evening.
