PROJECT OVERVIEW

This project in Padbury forms part of a wider renovation and extension of the property.

The garden is being completely reimagined to make full use of the space, transforming a sloped and water-affected site into a functional and well-structured outdoor environment.

The Challenge

The site presented a number of constraints, including a pronounced slope and drainage issues caused by water run-off from the paddock beyond.

The garden also needed to feel cohesive despite being divided into several functional areas, all while aligning with a modern architectural style.

OUR DESIGN APPROACH

The design takes a structured, layered approach, creating a series of connected outdoor spaces that respond to the levels and orientation of the site.

The aim is to form an “outdoor room” feel, with strong hard landscaping softened by planting that delivers year-round interest.

Design Visualisation

As part of the design process, a series of 3D illustrations were created to bring the scheme to life and help guide decision making. These visuals allowed the client to fully understand how the garden would sit across the sloping site, and how the different zones would connect.

The illustrations were particularly valuable in refining the layout of the pool, terraces and garden room, ensuring the balance between structure and open space felt right before construction began. They also helped to communicate materials, levels and planting in a clear and engaging way.

By working through the design in this way, the project could be developed with confidence, ensuring the final result remains true to the original vision.

KEY FEATURES

Swimming Pool and Surrounds

A 9m x 5m pool forms a central feature within the garden, with generous surrounding space for seating and lounging to create a relaxed outdoor living area.

Hot Tub Retreat

A dedicated hot tub space is integrated into the layout, with nearby seating to create a more private and comfortable zone for relaxation.

Terrace by the House

A main patio area directly outside the house accommodates both a sofa set and dining table, supporting everyday use and entertaining.

Garden Room and Entertaining Area

A bespoke garden room is positioned on a raised section of the site, with an adjoining pergola and BBQ area designed to capture the evening sun and create a sociable outdoor hub.

Managing Levels and Drainage

The design carefully addresses the sloping site and manages water movement across the garden, ensuring the space remains usable throughout the year.

Planting and Structure

Planting is used to soften the clean lines of the design, with a focus on evergreen structure and seasonal interest to ensure the garden remains visually strong all year round.

The Outcome

The finished garden transforms a disjointed and overgrown space into a series of well-balanced outdoor rooms.

Each area supports a different aspect of family life, while the overall design feels unified and timeless.

Despite the challenges during construction, the result is a garden that sits naturally within its setting and feels as though it has always been there.

Behind The Scenes

This project involved a significant transformation, starting with a sloping and underutilised garden that was affected by drainage and lacked clear structure.

Early stages focused on understanding the movement of water across the site and reshaping the ground to create a more functional layout. As the build progressed, the different zones began to take shape, with terraces, retaining structures and key features gradually defining the space.

The images below show the journey from before, through construction, to the finished garden. Despite the challenges presented by the levels and access, the project was carefully delivered to create a cohesive and well-balanced outdoor space.
