PROJECT OVERVIEW
This project in Wendover focused on rebalancing the front and rear gardens of an Edwardian home, following wider redevelopment works.
The aim was to reclaim space from parking at the front while creating a more structured and cohesive garden to the rear.

The Challenge
The front garden had become overly dominated by parking, limiting its visual appeal. At the same time, the rear garden required structure and clarity to match the quality of the renovated house. The design needed to balance practicality with a more refined aesthetic.
OUR DESIGN APPROACH
We focused on restoring balance to the overall plot.
The front garden was softened and reshaped, while the rear garden introduced stronger structure and a consistent material palette that ties the whole scheme together.

Front Garden Rebalancing
Parking areas were carefully reduced to reclaim space for planting, improving both the appearance and feel of the entrance to the property.

The rear garden introduces a more defined layout, creating usable outdoor space that complements the house and supports day-to-day living.
Materials and Detailing
A considered mix of materials has been used throughout to blend traditional character with a more contemporary finish, reflecting the updated property.
Cohesive Design
Both front and rear gardens are linked through consistent detailing, ensuring the space feels unified and well-resolved.
The Outcome
The finished garden successfully restores balance to the property, softening the front while creating a more usable and structured space to the rear. The result is a design that feels in keeping with the house and has a clear sense of purpose.

This new build garden started as a blank canvas.
The brief was to create a contemporary family garden with more privacy, structure and character - somewhere that worked for everyday life, but still felt refined and considered.
The finished space now includes defined areas for dining, relaxing and play, with porcelain paving, gravel and brick details, soft planting, lighting and a bespoke water feature.

It’s one of the questions we’re asked a lot, and the honest answer is: it depends on the garden.
Every space is different, and the design process needs time for the first conversation, site survey, ideas, concept plans and any changes along the way.

The Chilterns are full of hills.
And with that comes a lot of sloped gardens.
They can be tricky spaces to get right. The levels, the access, the drainage, the steps - there’s usually a lot more to think about than there first appears.
But a slope doesn’t have to be a problem.
Handled well, it can give a garden so much character. Different levels, better views, tucked-away seating, layered planting, and spaces that feel far more interesting than one flat lawn.
The important bit is making sure the practical details are properly thought through from the start.
Because when the structure works, the whole garden feels easier to use.

Seeing a garden on completion is always exciting.
Coming back a few years later is even better. The structure is still there, but the planting has softened, matured and completely transformed the feel of the space.
That’s one of the things we love most about what we do.

Heatwave on Site ☀️
A leaf blower for air conditioning.
A hose for a quick cool down.
A bit of shade wherever they could find it.
That’s how the J&S team got through last week’s heatwave. 😅
Behind the laughs was a lot of hard work. Working outdoors in those temperatures is no small task, but the team kept going, looked after each other, and never let the quality of their work slip.
We’re genuinely in awe of how the lads worked through those conditions. It wasn’t easy, but they just got on with it.

A heatwave is when you really start to notice how hard your garden is working.
New planting, pots and recently laid turf may need a little extra care this week, while established lawns and borders are often more resilient than they look.
A few simple things, like watering early or late, focusing on the roots, and checking pots daily - can make a real difference through the hot weather.

Avoid the hottest part of the day. Early morning or evening gives water a better chance to soak in before it evaporates.
A quick sprinkle often only wets the surface. Aim for a proper soak around the roots, especially for new planting, pots and recently laid turf.
Established plants can usually cope better. Newly planted borders, trees, hedging and turf need the most attention.
Established lawns often go brown in hot, dry weather, but usually recover when rain returns.
New turf is the exception and may need daily watering in warm, dry conditions.
Containers dry out quickly. Move them out of harsh afternoon sun where possible and check them daily.
A layer of mulch helps keep moisture in the soil and protects roots from drying out too quickly.
Your garden doesn’t need everything doing at once.
In hot weather, it’s often just about paying attention to the areas that need it most - new planting, pots, fresh turf and anything that’s looking a little stressed.
A bit of extra care in the right places can go a long way 🌿

We’re really proud of how this one came together.
Our Meadow Way project, now an APL Award-winning garden, began as a building site following a rear extension - a blank canvas with a rising garden and a clear brief: create outdoor rooms that feel like a natural continuation of the home.
Rather than fight the levels, we worked with them. A retaining wall was introduced, doubling as the backrest to bespoke banquette seating - shaping a space that feels both defined and relaxed.
Sun loungers were positioned to capture the best of the light, while a dedicated outdoor kitchen and dining area sits beneath an aluminium pergola with a louvered roof, offering flexibility through the seasons. The Grillo kitchen anchors the space, designed for both everyday use and entertaining.
Planting was kept simple and structural to complement the contemporary architecture and maintain clarity throughout.
A former construction site, now a series of purposeful outdoor rooms - each with its own role, yet seamlessly connected.
