Having joined the company late in the Summer, Rob has been busy working on build projects, utilising his extensive plant experience and developing his design skills. With the arrival of Spring, new design projects have landed on his desk including this garden near Hughenden.

This tricky project required a simple design that worked with the existing and dominating swimming pool. With the pool taking up much of the space, the first task was to encourage the client to change the cover as the pool was housed in a plastic enclosure which blocked views around the garden. The client agreed and this opens up the end of the garden which is a natural sun trap.

With a low maintenance scheme in mind, Rob recommended a Mediterranean style gravel garden. The pool surround is decked with good quality composite decking to offer longevity and a non-slip surface. Tall grasses flank the decked area to create some enclosure and screen the fence. The garden then opens out with a circular seating area reached via a decked walkway (gravel and bare feet don’t mix). This rest of the garden is laid with gravel with areas for planting and areas with a foundation to create pathways. There is a second seating area for a bench and both seating/entertainment and partially wrapped with upright timber posts. These posts are woven with climbing plants and help to define the space, add some height and make the seating space feel more cosy.

The planting is Mediterranean inspired and includes a mix of shrubs, trees and perennials offering year round interest. The scheme is also low maintenance with the gravel acting as a weed suppressant allowing the client the spend less time weeding and more time swimming.
